Jerome Johnson Richardson Sr. is a renowned American businessman. Besides this, he has also earned his repute as an NFL player. He is also the former owner of the National Football League (NFL). He had also laid the establishment of the Carolina Panthers franchise of which he was the owner for 23 years.

Early life

Jerry Richardson was born on July 18, 1936, in Spring Hope, North Carolina. He completed his high school from Fayetteville, North Carolina. Later he joined the Wofford College in, South Carolina. Here he was the member of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity, President of the Inter-Fraternity Council, and also a prominent member of the SCA Cabinet.

Jerry Richardson had built a strong profile in Wofford College. He holds the Wofford’s single-game record with 241 receiving yards vs. Newberry in 1956. He was chosen as a receiver in 1983 to Wofford’s All-Time Football team.

Career

One of the most significant profiles of Jerry Richardson is his ownership of the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League. Richardson was also the former NFL player since George Halas who went ahead to become the owner.

In 2000, he was elected in the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. Later, in 2006 and 2015, he also made it to the South Carolina Business and Sports Halls of Fame. In 2016 Richardson made a fund in the Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts, to honor his wife.

However, in December 2017, Jerry allegedly stepped down from this position in the Panthers organization after he was accused of sexual misconduct. The organization was thereafter put up for sale by Jerry Richardson. At present this team generates $325 million in revenue per year and it also earns as much as $80 million in profit.

Richardson’s 13-foot statue holding a football with two panthers was put up in 2016 at Bank of America Stadium by the Panthers LLC to honour him on his 80th birthday.

But, after the protests over George Floyd’s death, on June 10, 2020, the statue was removed over safety concerns.
