The long-awaited show, Tokyo vice, had to stop right after a few days of shooting. Due to COVID-19, the production stopped within a few days. This book adaptation has made people yearn for it. Firstly for the film and now for the web series, people have been waiting since 2016.
About Tokyo Vice
Tokyo Vice is an upcoming American crime drama series. It is based on a book named “Tokyo Vice”, written by Jake Adelstein. The story is inspired by his own experience as a journalist in Tokyo. Apparently, he was the first non-Japanese journalist to work with esteemed newspapers in Japan.
The show depicts the story of Jake, who is an American journalist. He works for a publication in Tokyo. The story is set in the late 1990s. This western journalist tries to investigate the most powerful criminals in the city. He tries to report on corruption within Tokyo’s underworld gang named ‘Vice squad’. During his tenure, he is helped and guided by detective Hiroto Katagiri, who is a father figure to Jake.

Tokyo Vice: Release Date
In August 2013, Tokyo Vice was announced to be adapted for a film, directed by Anthony Mandler. The film was expected to start in 2015. Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe was featured as Adelstein. Although for some reason, production for the film never commenced.
Later, in June 2019, Tokyo Vice web television series was announced. It was scheduled to release in 2020. However, there is no confirmed date or update available. The show even started with production in 2020. Eventually, the filming was halted after six days due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Reportedly, the crew and production team landed in Japan just a few days before the lockdown in Japan. In an interview with Deadline, the show’s producer Michael Mann said, “I shot six days in Tokyo. I had 12 days left. We have mothballed everything in Tokyo. We’re ready to resume. It’s when we can, and that’s an unknown,”
The show will run for about 10 episodes in the first season. Tokyo Vice will debut on HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming platform.
Cast of Tokyo Vice
- Ansel Elgort as Jake Adelstein, an American journalist from Missouri who moves to Tokyo.
- Ken Watanabe as Hiroto Katagiri, the detective who helps and guides Jake.
Odessa Young plays Samantha. She is an American ex-pat living in Tokyo as a hostess of the Kabukicho district. - Ella Rumpf plays Polina. She is an Eastern European ex-pat who is struggling as a new hostess. She came to Tokyo to work as a model. But, she got pulled into the seedy underworld of Kabukicho.
- Rinko Kikuchi as Adelstein’s supervisor. She is the first Japanese actress to be nominated for an Oscar in 50 years.
