Early life of Vanessa Laine Bryant
Vanessa Laine Bryant was born in Los Angeles on May 5, 1982. Vanessa Cornejo Urbieta was her name at birth. She took the last name ‘Laine’ from Stephen Laine, her stepfather.
As she was working as a background dancer for a music video, Kobe and Vanessa met. At the moment, she was 17 years old. Kobe, who was 21 at the time, was working on his musical debut album in the studio. Within six months of that first meeting, they got engaged. When they married, Laine was still a high school senior. The parents of Kobe, his agent, and his sisters decided not to attend the wedding because of their age. They did not accept the marriage initially. They married at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Dana Point, California, on April 18, 2001. For two years, Kobe did not speak to his parents as a result. Since Vanessa welcomed their first baby in 2003, the ice cracked. They would go on to have four kids, all girls, together.
In December 2011, citing irreconcilable discrepancies, Vanessa filed for divorce. Kobe’s net worth at the time she sued was $200 million. They hadn’t got a prenup. Interestingly (although this didn’t matter because they didn’t divorce), Vanessa waited to file for divorce just a few months after their 10th wedding anniversary. In California, as opposed to a period dependent on the years they were together, any marriage lasting more than ten years results in spousal support forever. A few months after Kobe had signed an $84 million contract extension, she also decided to apply. They revealed two years later that they had reconciled and called the divorce off.

Tragically, in a helicopter crash on January 26, 2020, Kobe Bryant and one of the couple’s daughters died. Kobe was around 41.
