The actor was born to David Woods Kemper and Dorothy Ann and was given the name Elizabeth Claire Kemper after birth. Her father was the CEO of Commerce Bancshares, a Kemper family business.  She is the granddaughter of Mildred Lane Kemper, the namesake of Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum.

The famous actress kick-started her career with her first debut in comedy shows. She performed with Quipfire and wrote several sketch comedy shows. Ellie also got featured in a commercial for Kmart, which later earned her a Screen Actors Guild card.

Further, the actress moved to New York City to continue with her career in comedy. She joined the Big Black Car and performed with the team at the big People’s Improv Theatre. She participated in several shows for Upright Citizens Brigade, an improvisational comedy, and a sketch comedy theatre.
