Vera was born on June 27, 1949, in New York City. She is the daughter of affluent Chinese immigrants and hence she enjoyed a privileged childhood in Manhattan. She attended popular private schools such as the Chapin School and the School of American Ballet, before enrolling at Sarah Lawrence College. Wang briefly studied abroad in Paris during her sophomore year before returning to the States to get a degree in art history.\
After briefly attempting a career in figure skating, a dream she couldn’t quite see-through, Wang has started working for Vogue magazine post her graduation in 1971. Next year, she has made senior fashion editor, a title she held for the next 15 years.
After marrying her boyfriend of long in 1989, Wang, exhausted by the scarcity in a variety of bridal wear, sketched her own design and had it materialized at a cost of $10,000.
The next year, with financial assistance from her father, Wang opened her own bridal boutique in upstate New York.
The boutique initially offered couture gown from other more prominent designers and catered mostly to celebrities and the extremely wealthy, but later on, as she honed her skills, Wang launched her own collection of sophisticated bridal wear.
Vera Wang first hit the global spotlight in the 1994 Olympic Games when she had designed a hand-beaded ensemble for figure skater Nancy Kerrigan.
