About The Last Kingdom Season 5
The Last Kingdom Season 5 is a British historical series by BBC. The show is based on the novel series by Bernard Cornwell named ‘The Saxon Stories’. The first two seasons were released on BBC. Later, Netflix became the sole distributor of the show, produced by Carnival Films.
The story revolves around the protagonist Uhtred. He is born in the kingdom of Bebbanberg. It is set in the year 872 and has covered 40 years by the fourth season. In 872, various kingdoms that today is known as England, have been invaded by Danes. Lastly, the great kingdom of Wessex stands alone, commanded by King Alfred.
Uhtred’s father dies in a war against Danes. He is left with his uncle and stepmother. Amidst all this, Uhtred is taken as a slave by Danes, and Danish Northumbria becomes his adopted home. He was born a Saxon but was raised by the Vikings as one of their own. After that, the fellow Danes attack his place, killing his adoptive father, Earl Ragnar. Hence, Uhtred takes an oath to avenge his adoptive father’s death. Meanwhile, Uhtred also tries to claim the kingdom of Bebbanberg that is now ruled by his uncle. Consequently, he finds himself in the crossroads. He has to choose between the kingdom of his ancestors or the people who raised him as their own. Hence, his loyalty is tested at different steps.
Release Date of The Last Kingdom
The first season of The Last Kingdom premiered on BBC in 2015. By now, four seasons have been released. The fourth season was released in 2018. Later on 7 July 2020, the series was renewed for a fifth series by Netflix.

However, there is no official announcement regarding the release date. Moreover, there is no update on whether the filming has begun. It is not known yet if the filming will start any soon during the pandemic. Nonetheless, it has been reported that the shooting is set to take place in Budapest.
What to expect from The Last Kingdom Season 5
The plot of The Last Kingdom Season 5 is likely to be based on the 9th and 10th series of the novel ‘The Saxon Stories’. It is expected that Uhtred will discover how his destiny is highly entangled with the future of England.
If the story goes as per the novel, Uhtred will fight his greatest enemy and suffer his greatest loss on his way to achieve his destiny. Niguel Merchant, the executive producer at Carnival Films, said that they are extremely proud of the show. He said, “We had such a tremendous response to the last season, so we are thrilled to be bringing it back for season five on Netflix. With such a loyal fanbase, we’re excited to give viewers a chance to follow Uhtred on the next stage of his quest.”
