Filming recently resumed on the fourth episode of Hulu’s dystopian drama The Handmaid’s Tale featuring Elisabeth Moss – even if we’re still waiting longer than normal for its air-date, following the lengthy delays triggered by the global coronavirus pandemic.
After months of shooting delays, the long-awaited fourth installment of June’s tale is resuming production – but with a revised air-date projection for 2021.
The play also features a brand-new cast member – teenage actress McKenna Grace of Gifted and Fuller House fame, who will play the attractive, externally-compliant (and outwardly healthy) wife of a much older Commander.
Cast member Bradley Whit ford (who plays Commander Joseph Lawrence) announced in August 2020 that the cast and crew were quarantining for a fortnight before the re-start of shooting was inevitable.
The next season will focus on Offered / June (Elizabeth Moss), who survived the gunshot wound in season three of the finals, continuing her quest to rescue the women and children of Gilead and send them safely to Canada – while her husband Luke (O-T Fagbenle) will attempt vengeance on Fred.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 4: Release date!
Sadly, the fourth season of The Handmaid’s Tale Premiere was postponed back to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, Hulu reported.
Originally set for release this fall, the series was postponed after COVID-19 suspended production in Canada back in March, much like several other programs. Cast-member Bradley Whitford, who plays Commander Joseph Lawrence, announced at the end of August 2020 that production had begun again – but only after a required two-week “hardcore” quarantine period for all involved.
While viewers will have to wait a while for the fourth season, Hulu released a teaser trailer to give fans a preview of what’s to come.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 4: Cast!
It still hasn’t been revealed whether any of the original cast will return, but it seems likely that we’ll see the central cast members resuming their roles – including Elisabeth Moss as June.
And since she endured a highly dangerous wound during season three of the finals, the season four trailer shows that June is actually alive and ready to continue her mission to rescue the children of Gilead.
Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, Alexis Bledel, Max Minghella, O-T Fabhenle, Amanda Brugel, and Bradley Whit ford are set to return, as well as Ann Down, who plays a frightening Aunt Lydia.
We do have a brand-new repetitive cast member: McKenna Grace (The Haunting of Hill House) as Mrs. Keyes, the smart teenage wife of a much older Commander, as per Deadline, who uses her calm and pious exterior to mask “chaos, yet madness, inside of it.”
Season 4 Plot
The Handmaid’s Tale season three has just ended broadcasting Hulu but it’s not yet clear what path the storyline will go. The next series is likely to pick up at the cliffhanger conclusion of season three, where June (played by Elisabeth Moss) was swept away by her fellow handmaidens.
The children managed to escape and make a trip to Canada, so we’re sure to see more about this in the new season.
