The franchise has been known for their portrayal of true horror stories. Similarly, ‘The Devil Made Me Do It’ is also grounded on true events.

The third part of The Conjuring is based on a chilling murder trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, that took place in Connecticut in 1981. It is said to be one of the scariest and most sensational cases dealt by Ed and Lorraine Warren.

About the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson:

The trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson is popularly known as, “Devil made me do it” case. It is the first known court case in the United States, where the defense presented Johnson, the defendant, innocent as he was possessed when he committed the crime.

Arne Cheyenne Johnson killed his landlord, Alan Bono, during a heated conversation. Johnson denied any personal responsibility for the crime claiming that he was under demonic possession when it happened. The demon was said to have fled into Johnson from an eleven year old boy, David Glatzel when the priests were performing an exorcism on him.

Apparently, the judge ruled that it is infeasible as no such argument could ever be proven.
As a result, Johnson was convicted for murder. He was sentenced for 10-20 years though he only served for five years.
