Steven John Carell was born on August 16, 1962, in Concord, Massachusetts. His father was Edwin Carell, an electrical engineer, and his mother was Harriet Theresa, a psychiatric nurse. Carell was the youngest of four brothers and was brought up in Acton, Massachusetts. The family would perform together, with Carell playing the fife. He later joined a reenactment group that portrayed the 10th Regiment of Foot.
He attended high school at Middlesex School and he played ice hockey and lacrosse. He continued his education at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. He got graduated with a history degree in 1984.
