Robert Norman Reiner (born 6 March 1947) is an American actress, comedian, director, and author. As an actress, Reiner first rose to national prominence with the role of Michael Stivic in the CBS sitcom all in the Family (1971–1979), a success that won him two Primetime Emmy Awards.

As a producer, Reiner was awarded the Directors Guild of America Awards for the forthcoming drama Stand by Me (1986), the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally (1989), and the military trial thriller A Few Decent Men (1992), the latter of which also won him the Academy Award for Best Picture. He has earned four nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Director.

Rob Reiner Early life

Reiner was born in the Bronx, New York, and Jewish family on March 6, 1947. He is the son of Estelle Reiner (born Lobos; 1914–2008), an actress, and Carl Reiner (1922–2020), a renowned comedian, singer, journalist, producer, and director.

As a boy, Reiner lived at 48 Bonnie Meadow Road in New Rochelle, New York; the home of the fictitious Petrie family at the Dick Van Dyke Show, produced by Rob’s father, was 148, Bonnie Meadow Lane. He studied film at the UCLA Film School.

Career

In the late 1960s, Reiner played bit roles in many television series, including Batman, The Andy Griffith Show, Room 222, Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., and The Beverly Hillbillies. He started his career writing for the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1968 and 1969, with Steve Martin as his literary agent as the two youngest writers on the panel.

Reiner has kept playing leading roles in a variety of films and television shows, including Throw Momma from the Train (1987), Sleepless in Seattle (1993), Bullets over Broadway (1994), The First Wives Club (1996), Primary Colors (1998), EDtv (1999), New Girl (2012–2018) and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). He also parodied himself with cameos in works such as Dickie Roberts: Former Kid Star (2003) and 30 Rock (2010).

Personal life

In 1971, Rob Reiner married actress/director Penny Marshall. Marshall’s daughter, actress Tracy Reiner (Their own League), was from a previous relationship to Michael Henry. Reiner and Marshall were divorced in 1981.

Reiner has been welcomed to his future partner, photographer Michele Singer when directing When Harry Met Sally. Not only did the meeting result in his decision to alter the end of the script, but he also married Singer in 1989. They have three brothers, Jake (born in 1991), Nick (born in 1993), and Romy (born in 1998).

Reiner claimed that his childhood home was not exclusively Jewish, although he had a ritual at Bar Mitzvah; Reiner’s father, Carl, admitted that he himself had become an atheist as the Holocaust progressed. Rob described himself as having no religious association with Bill Maher on January 13, 2012, an episode of Real-Time and an atheist.
