Harry Potter is one of the most famous and successful British-American film series, which is based on J.K Rowling’s novel. It is also the third-largest film franchise in history, which has gained immense success and tremendous popularity across the globe. Harry Potter is a movie that won the many Indians’ hearts as well. The Indian characters in the movie, named as Padma Patil and Parvati Patil, were played by Afshan Azad and Shefali Chowdhury.
In the fourth part of the film ”’Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”, The Yule Ball was the main highlight which caught the attention of many viewers. Still, the two major Indian characters have left a remarkable impact on viewers’ minds by their outstanding performances.

They have entertained us in the fourth part of the film, but Shefali and Afshan also played Patil twins in five Harry Potter films, which include the two-part finale, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Parts 1 and 2. But, only a few people know how they were selected for the film. In a 2005, BBC interview, both the Indian Harry Potter actors revealed about the stressful process of their casting.
Harry Potter’s Indian fame Shefali revealed in an interview that, “when she was in SchoolSchool, the casting agents were searching the twins to cast in the Harry Potter series in some schools in her area. And at that time, Shefali Chowdhury had an exam, and it did not go well, so she was distraught. After that, her school teacher was calling out her name, looking at a sheet of paper with all the other girls. And then her teacher told her about the casting agents who were looking for the twins to cast in the most successful Harry Potter series, and her teacher also asked for the audition for Harry Potter film, if she was interested. And Shefali immediately replied yes, as she read the JK Rowlings’s Harry Potter novel.
Besides that, Harry Potter star also explained that “when she went for her first audition, she realized that there were many girls; after that, she got worried about how she would get selected. She then decided that there is nothing to lose, if she gives the audition, later she took to benefit the golden opportunity, and just went on to give it a try. A week or two weeks later, Shefali got a call saying that she was selected for the next round. She was very happy and also cleared all the rounds until she was told to audition it with Afshan, and in front of Mike Newell, who was the director of the movie, she said that she was very happy when she got selected.
While Afshan Azad also revealed how she was selected for the Harry Potter film and disclosed in an interview that “she went to SchoolSchool and read the notice. Her teacher announced that two casting agents would come, as they are looking for two Asian twins, and hearing this, everyone in the class started laughing.
So, everyone in the SchoolSchool auditioned as she was in an all-girls’ SchoolSchool. And that’s when their journey began in the Harry Potter films. And like Shefali, she also thought that she wouldn’t be selected, but as Shefali said that she had nothing to lose, she also went and gave the audition, and to her surprise, she got selected where for the next round she had to audition with Shefali in front of Mike.
