Steps to make a DIY no sew face mask amid coronavirus outbreak

COVID- 19 has led to a global lockdown and taken more than 1,02,774 lives worldwide. Amid coronavirus outbreak, face masks have been recommended to prevent the spread of this pandemic. There are reports, which suggests that the CDC has modified its guidelines recently and recommended that everyone should wear some sort of a cloth face-covering in public places. If buying a mask or sewing one isn’t suitable for you, making a DIY face mask with the materials you already have at home is surprisingly simple.

As the CDC recently issued a guideline to use a face mask, it does not mean that you have to use medically proven N-95 protective masks. These face masks are only recommended for healthcare professionals working directly with coronavirus patients, not for everyone.

Such forms of masks are in desperate need of hospitals, so it’s best to save the N-95 for them. Homemade versions are still a great alternative and can be more comfortable and practical than just wrapping a bandana or a scarf around your face.

Fortunately, making your own mask at home is simple, ethical, and cheap — and you don’t even need to break out the sewing machine to do that. A video posted by Amanda Perna illustrates steps to make a DIV no-sew face mask using materials you likely already have at home. Begin by folding a square scarf or bandana four times in the longitudinal direction to create a strip that is big enough to cover the bottom half of your face. Then pull each end of the fabric through an elastic hair tie or rubber band (one on the right and one on the left) to split it approximately into thirds.

Fold the ends into the middle, and tuck one end into the other’s opening to keep it all together. Pull the hair ties over your ears to protect the face mask. To improve the filtration capacity of your mask, put a trimmed coffee filter or paper towel on the fabric where your mouth goes before folding it.

The mask would need to be disinfected after wearing it outdoors. Take it out, throw away the filter that is disposable and soak the fabric in soapy water for a few minutes. Once the cloth is clean and dry, add a new filter, and reassemble the mask to use it again as shown above.
