According to a new research published in the journal ‘Nature Communications’, scientists have found a compound which could inhibit cancer cells in their tracks alongside preventing their spread and making them vulnerable to killing. It is imperative to observe that metastasis or controlling the spread of cancerous cells is equivalent in significance to destruction of cancerous cells in the treatment of cancer. According to the lead author of the research and a professor of medicine at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), Raymond Bergan, a large share of existing cancer therapies are designed specifically for killing cancerous cells.
The primary issue that is intended to be addressed by Bergan and his team at OHSU in partnership with peers from the University of Chicago, the Northwestern University, Xiamen University, China and the University of Washington is vested in lack of cancer therapies that could impede the movement of cancer. In a statement Bergan has expressed that if cancers are detected early in a specific organ such as prostate, colon, breast, lung and others while being a little lump, the chances of survival are improved. He added that delay in detection of cancer can lead to fatal outcomes.
Efforts have been underway since 2011 by researchers in the attempt to develop a drug that can inhibit the spread of cancer. The researchers were able to identify a specific compound that depicted the potency to inhibit cell mobility in cancer of the prostate, colon, breast and lung. The compound is termed as KBU2046 which exercises its impact by binding with certain proteins which clean cells. The binding effect enables the compound to limit the mobility of cells without any side effects.
Thus, the final objective of the research is directed towards development of a therapy which could be given to patients in early stages of cancers thereby preventing metastasis of the cancer cells which could render the disease beyond treatment. However other researchers have emphasized on the need for further research on application of the compound in treatment of cancer patients as well as the promising aspects of this project for identifying novel approaches for treatment of patients.
