The plans for the development of the sequel to the classic 2004 movie, Kung Fu Hustle is finally on. After 15 years, the actor-director Stephen Chow confirms that a sequel is coming.
Chow confirms that the movie will not be a direct sequel to the previous cult movie, but will be a reboot of the franchise. It is going to be “a spiritual follow-up” which is likely to be set in the present day instead of the sequences in the previous movie which covers up the events in 1930s China.
What can we expect from Kung Fu Hustle 2?
Stephen Chow had directed and scripted the original Kung Fu Hustle. As per his interview with M.A.A.C, Chow is willing to help the newest entry in the franchise.
While Chow had started his career as an actor in China making his debut in television appearances circa the 1980s, he is focusing more on directing rather than acting in present times.
Stephen Chow during a promo interview for his movie The New King Of Comedy, which was released on February 5, 2019, revealed the plans for the sequel to Kung Fu Hustle 2. He said the movie is officially in the works.
Chow also confirms that he will resume the directorial position and will possibly make a cameo in the movie after he completes the sequel to the 2016 Mermaid movie.
The question about the location of the upcoming movie is still in discussion. While the majority of Stephen Chow’s films are set in his native place China, including the 2004 Kung Fu movie, Chow is looking to make a major departure in Kung Fu 2. According to the filmmaker, it is likely to be set in a foreign country. He is seeking to add new dimensions to this upcoming movie, and hence the sequel will just have a passing connection to the original film.
Who is likely to be back in Kung Fu Hustle 2?
According to Stephen Chow, the movie will feature “a lot of new characters”. There can be a number of a cameo by the original cast members, but it will mostly feature new characters.
As per the reports, Kung Fu Hustle 2 is also looking forward to bring ahead a female lead character. Chow plans on having a female lead in the movie.
The previous movie takes place before the events of the Chinese Communist revolution. The upcoming movie, Kung Fu Hustle 2 will have a modern-day setting.
