After so many precise experiments in the International Space Station, the explorers have certainly identified the microbes in space. This is for the first time that ISS scientists have proved the presence of microbes in the space station itself without the need of returning the samples to earth for tests. Scientists found the alien microbes in the space, this will help them to diagnose and ailments in the real-time perfectly. Also, this will allow investigators to identify DNA-based life on other planets.
Scientists have first to isolate the DNA samples to identify the microbes successfully. Then the DNA needs to be amplified (making copies) and after DNA sequencing is done, one can distinguish the microbes or the bacteria. In order to identify the DNA, two steps were followed. At First, the microbial samples were collected and amplified by PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), and then in next step, DNA sequencing was done on microbes to know them.
Peggy Whitson and Sarah Wallace and her team conducted the experiment and was accompanied by NASA microbiologist. Petri plates were touched to different surfaces of the ISS as a part of regular microbial monitoring. Whitson managed to transfer microbial cells from growing bacterial colonies on those Petri plates into the small tests with the help of Microgravity Science Glovebox (MSG), and this was the first time scientist carried this type of experiment.
After collecting the samples in test tubes, the DNA was amplified, and then sequencing process began. The amplified DNA was sequenced with the help of the MinION device. To identify and examine the data collected by the project team. The NASA biochemist, Aaron Burton said that once they get the data on the ground, scientists were capable of turning it around and start examining the samples. Repeated multiple tests were done to prove that the samples detected in space were of microbes.
Russian astronaut Anton Shkaplerov who is aboard ISS later informed that the bacteria, found on the surface of the space station was not any ordinary microbe but an alien microbe or bacteria. Earlier earthly microbes were discovered on the skin of ISS, and they were verified to be coming along with the launch of the space station as well as other spacecraft. Shkaplerov continued that these bacteria were not there when they launched ISS but later microbes found on the swabs. So scientists consider that they came from outside space and settled on the surface.
