OnePlus 5 Oreo beta

OnePlus 5 to get Android Oreo update with Face Unlocking feature

This week OnePlus began rolling out the latest Android Oreo update to the OnePlus 3 and 3T models. The subsequent device to get the OS update is the OnePlus 5. The iterative update to the OnePlus 5 boasts a new 6.01-inch AMOLED display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. To accommodate this expansive new screen in the same footprint as its predecessor, OnePlus relocated the fingerprint scanner to the back of the device. Apart from new features, the flagship smartphone will also get Face Unlock, which is the organisation’s unique way of validating devices and is available on the newly launched OnePlus 5T.

Face Unlock of a device utilizing the facial mapping technique is fast converting an industry standard as brands focus on pushing customers towards more security. OnePlus too allows the capability through its latest OnePlus 5T model. Though, with the upcoming OS update to older models, it is expected the feature will soon grace the OnePlus 5, Android. This characteristic will work the same as on the OnePlus 5T. You can either add face data while fixing up the device or add the data later. Once the feature is enabled, you can unlock the device by merely pointing the phone’s front camera at your face without the requirement for extra swiping on the screen or putting in the passcode. When the device is woken either by pressing the power button or double-tapping the screen, it will immediately unlock and take you to the Home screen.

One of the caveats of Face Unlock is that it does not function seamlessly in low-light situations. As there is no specialized hardware to facilitate recognition of dim-lit conditions, the feature depends on the software, which, the company reportedly suggests, is less secure than the fingerprint sensor. Other than this Face Unlock trait, OnePlus 5 stands to receive all the features of Android Oreo which include Notification Dots, Picture-in-Picture mode for multitasking, Instant Apps, and a set of new emoji among others.

As for specifications, the OnePlus five is provided with a 5.5-inch full-HD AMOLED screen with 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The Qualcomm Snapdragon powers it 835 octa-core 2.45GHz SoC paired with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of internal storage. It operates Android 7.1.1 Nougat based Oxygen OS 4.5.0 out-of-the-box, but will soon be upgradable to Oreo. For optics, there is a dual-camera setup including 16-megapixel + 20-megapixel sensors at the back and a 16-megapixel camera up at the front. It is fueled by a 3,300mAh battery that supports the Dash Charge fast-charging format. The OnePlus 5 was priced from Rs 32,999 but is set to be discontinued as the OnePlus 5T goes on open sale in the coming days.
