Modi skips Indira Gandhi’s memorial event; flagged off a “unity run”


Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not come for the death anniversary of Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India, held at Shakti Sthal memorial. While other dignitaries like President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Hamid Ansari and many other congress top leaders paid tributes to her. Other top leaders like Soniya Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi also placed garlends on the place where she was laid to rest. Whereas, Modi flagged off a “unity run” on 139th birth anniversary of Sardar Patel.

A speech of Indra Gandhi was played at the Shakti Sthal. Moreover, many songs were also played that showed devotions. A small event was also organised at her home where she died on this day, 30 years ago.

Showing congress’s grudge on the Prime Minister not even coming to give a tribute to the former prime minister, Senior Congress leader Manish Tewari said, “Indira Gandhi lived and died for the nation. It was the responsibility of every government to honour her sacrifice.”

Earlier in the day, Modi tweeted:”I join my fellow countrymen & women in remembering former PM Smt. Indira Gandhi on her Punya Tithi.”

Modi paid rich tributes to Sardar Patel, also known as “loh purush“. “Sardar Patel’s life is a journey of deep-rooted courage, dedication & service to the Motherland. He is truly the architect of Modern India,” the Prime Minister tweeted.

Plates, cups, saucers and some more items, that Sardar Patel used, were willed on the name of his family.

“Received some personal belongings of Sardar Patel. The items, include plates, cups and saucers etc used by Sardar Patel himself. These items are a unique part of India’s heritage,” Modi wrote on Bipin Dahyabhai Patel, grandson of Sardar Patel facebook account.
