Chetan Bhagat’s ‘Half Girlfriend’ is a buzz among his fan club

Chetan Bhagat after pursuing his mechanical engineering and MBA from IIT-D and IIM-A turned his way around to make career in writing. After his six blockbusters scripts, Five Point Someone(2004), One Night @ the Call Center(2005), The 3 Mistakes of Life(2008), 2 States(2009), Revolution 2020(2011), What Young India Wants(2012), he is finally here with another hit script Half Girlfriend(2014). As his writing mesmerised readers, in meanwhile it also inspired Bollywood as four of his novels were a theme for few films, including 3 Idiots, Kai Po Che!, 2 States. New York Times stated Bhagat as the all time favourite author in India’s history. “Bhagat is the biggest selling English language novelist in India’s history,” said New York Times. For now Bhagat created a buzz among the readers for his new release “Half Girlfriend”.

Despite the title being Half Girlfriend, Bhagat’s story revolves around his standard settings- a prestigious college, a normal boy, a good looking girl for whom everyone chases in campus, a sudden meet, common activities (here is basketball). Like other pieces of him, the agonist, a male has lack of self esteem where the girl he looks for belongs to high class family of Delhi where beautifulness and talent are an add-on.

Like many of his old hits, Chetan followed the same format of writing. In his novels he usually starts with a strange meeting of a commoner with the protagonist and in this script too Madhav Jha, a boy from Dumraon, Bihar meets the author Chetan Bhagat in his room where he hands him a couple of journals of his half girlfriend whom he thinks have passed away many years ago. This is more like 2 States where Krish meets a psychologists and discovers that the protagonist is under depression and in this story too Madhav becomes depressed as according to him his girlfriend has died years ago because of cancer. As usual, he narrates his sorrowful story to Chetan which is almost like the theme of 2 States.

The interesting part starts when Madhav gets attracted to the female character, Riya and wants her to get in a relationship with him. After many refusals, she agrees to become her half girlfriend. The word half girlfriend has created a buzz among Chetan’s fan club.

The summary of this script is as follows, “Once upon a time, there was a Bihari boy called Madhav. He fell in love with a rich girl from Delhi called Riya. Madhav didnt speak English well. Riya did. Madhav wanted a relationship. Riya didn’t. Riya just wanted friendship. Madhav didn’t. Riya suggested a compromise. She agreed to be his half-girlfriend.”

Though Half Girlfriend is a normal script like any other new author’s novel but what differentiates Chetan with others is his writing skill that forces the readers to ruffle through the pages. As his earlier blockbusters were a quality time pass, he guarantees same for Half Girlfriend .
