Overview
Firstly, the show presents a world where fertility rates have gone down due to pollution as well as sexually transmitted diseases. The government establishes a new rule, where fertile women are forced to get impregnated by the elite commanders or other people in power whose wives cannot conceive a child. The handmaids are not named, they are known by the name of the person they work for and an “of” is added before their name. They also have many restrictions.
The story centers around Offred, who was a handmaid and the problems she faces. Her flashback of the life she had before are also shown. She was married and was going to flee from the country but was captured on the way. She has not seen him nor her daughter since then.
The Handmaid’s tale tells us about a time when women were forced to work as handmaids. It shows how the elites took advantage of the powerless and used them for their own benefits.
