Some latest reports suggest that an American epic historical romance film “Gone With The Wind’ will be re-released by streaming platform HBO Max soon. Apart from that, it is also reported that this movie is all set to back with a new introduction by Black scholar and TV host Jacqueline Stewart. The news has been recently confirmed by HBO Max, a few days back, the 1939 film was removed from this OTT platform on June 10, 2020, because of its racist depictions and content on slavery.
Some days ago, the spokesperson of HBO revealed that “Gone with the Wind” is a product of its time and depicts some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been commonplace in American society.
Besides that, the representative for HBO further added that “such racist depictions were as inaccurate then as they are now”. They thought of keeping the title in its actual place without any explanations and shame.
Besides that, new television host Jacqueline Stewart also stated that in the current scenario., several people are now shifting to iconic films which portray the “racial re-education”. Since people are doing their homework, then they should thoroughly be informed about the African American Community with honest, genuine and benefitting conversations or debates discussed.
The chairman of WarnerMedia Bob Greenblatt revealed in an interview that, previously, they had not placed a disclaimer to Gone With The Wind on HBO Max. It leads to the issues that the movie brings up. HBO Max took the movie and does not regret this fact. Instead, he regrets that it was not taken down earlier. He is now introducing Gone with the Wind with a new and revised context.
The decision of taking down of the movie was made by John Ridley, who is the director, screenwriter and a novelist too who wrote in an article about the African American slavery. This article was like a light for the Black Lives Matter movement as it gave meaning and support to them for equal justice after the injustice caused by George Floyd. As we all know how unfortunate choking death was caused upon him by the police officer.
Though, there is no announcement made regarding the return date for Gone with the Wind on HBO Max. Gone with the Wind has featured Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, Clark Gable, and Hattie McDaniel, and it has been helmed by the famous director Victor Fleming. This American epic historical romance film is based on the novel of the same name” Gone with the Wind” written by Margaret Mitchell. Apart from that, this film has also received 8 eight Oscars which include Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for McDaniel.
