Caliphate Season 2 Speculation and Updates

Caliphate Season 2

Caliphate is a Swedish TV series created by Niklas Rockstrom and Wilhelm Behrman and released in January 2020 on SVT. The eight-part drama dealing with ISIS recruitment processes gained quite a following and was even nominated for the Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize. The show’s success led to it being acquired by Netflix and released globally in March 2020. As for the show’s second season, here’s what we know so far.

Caliphate Season 2 Release Date

When asked if another season of Caliphate was in the works, creator Wilhelm Behrman replied he wasn’t so sure since he had shifted his interest to his other projects and stated that it’s more fun to write new stories rather than work on second seasons. However, this conversation took place before the show was acquired by Netflix, and the circumstances are different now. The first season was a major success, and the only logical choice for Netflix would be to renew the show for another season.

If a new season is in fact announced though, do not expect its production to begin anytime before 2021, which means it might see a release date in 2022 or late 2021 if we’re lucky.

Caliphate Season 2 Plot

Caliphate season 1 builds up to a terror attack by ISIS in Sweden. Swedish intelligence agent gets intel on the attack and recruits one of the women involved in the attack to her side in return for safe passage out of the country. The woman, Parvin, must risk lying to her husband, who happens to be overseeing the attack, in order to extract information out of him without blowing her cover.

The plan depends on Ibbe being able to convince four women to sacrifice themselves in order to complete the mission. Ibbe tries to manipulate the women by somehow making them believe that his ideas were aligned with their religion and that they would be giving their lives away for a greater cause.

It seems that radicalization was the essence of the first season, and season 2 may dwell further into the same topic. It is safe to say that Caliphate’s season 2 will have a lot of suspense and drama, not unlike season 1, whose every episode was simply nerve-racking.
